Top 10 Disney films

Disney films have been a huuuuuge part of my life from a very young age. My sister and I would spend so many hours, days and school holidays watching Disney movies back-to-back. We memorised so many quotes, songs and music that we are always testing our Disney knowledge through everyday conversations. Even today, they are usually my go-to movies to lift my mood up.

So as it's the month of the January blues, I thought I'd share my top 10 favourite Disney animated films to hopefully spread some nostalgia and happy feelings! My list only includes Disney’s 2D animated films because the list was getting too long! They’re also not in any particular order because that would be too difficult!

Lilo and Stitch

This Disney movie quickly became one of my top favourites. It’s set in Hawaii, features beautiful Hawaiian-style music such as He Mele No Lilo and Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride. Stitch (Experiment #626) is a blue, fluffy alien who escapes imprisonment from the Galactic Federation and travels to Planet Earth, landing in Hawaii. He is mistakenly thought to be a dog and is adopted by a young girl, Lilo.

Lilo is a huge Elvis fan and treats us to some classics from the King. She is also misunderstood by others around her and finds friendship in Stitch who she believes is also misunderstood. Lilo and her sister Nani also often say to each other: ‘Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind’ and it has remained a strong message in my own family.

My younger sister and I felt a strong connection to these sisters and I still even call my sister Lilo as a nickname.

Beauty and the Beast

From a young age I felt I could relate to Belle for her love of books, imagination and taste for adventure, plus as I got older, I developed a bit of an odd crush on the Beast and never really liked it when he became human. My favourite songs from this Disney film are ‘Belle’ and ‘Something There’. In fact I love the music from this film so much, I also have the soundtrack!

The Little Mermaid

I think it would be fair to say a lot of young kids dreamt of being a mermaid after watching The Little Mermaid. Every time I went swimming, I ‘d pretend I was Ariel sing ‘Part of Your World’. I love the music and characters, and always had a bit of a crush on Prince Eric! Plus I can totally relate to having gadgets and gizmos a-plenty!

Hunchback of Notre Dame

This film doesn’t seem to everybody’s cup of tea, but I love it! Songs such as ‘Out There’ and ‘Bells of Notre Dame’ are absolutely beautiful, in fact the whole music score is wonderful and I highly recommend the soundtrack! I also love Esmerelda for being such a sassy, confident and strong woman. This is one of those Disney films where I’m laughing at one scene and sobbing in the next. There are great jokes such as when Phoebus says to his horse, Achilles ‘heel’ and the gargoyles add plenty of comic value. But there are also darker tones such as lust, jealousy and sadism, setting this Disney film apart from many others.

Pocahontas

This was the first Disney film I saw in the cinema and as a five-year-old, I cried my little heart out at the saddest parts. I was devastated when my family moved house and we lost the videotape! I had to wait 6 months until Christmas before I could watch it again! To be honest, though, despite being a 27 year old woman and now I know the true story of Pocahontas, I still cry to this film. The animation, songs and characters are all beautiful and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Aladdin

I think it would be fair to say by now that I like a Disney movie with some adventure in it. So Aladdin with its magic lamp, genie, flying carpet and enchanted cave of wonders was always going to be a favourite of mine! Again the princess in this movie, Princess Jasmine is a strong woman who wants the freedom of marrying who she loves, she also doesn’t take any crap from the men in this film. The Genie, voiced by Robin Williams is pure gold and the music is fantastic. The character I could relate to most though, was Abu, mainly because he doesn’t like to share food…

Emperor’s New Groove

My mum and her friend wanted to go shopping one afternoon and so decided to drop all the kids at the cinema to watch Emperor’s New Groove. It was perhaps the funniest Disney film I had ever seen. The story about a self-absorbed Emperor being turned into a llama and ending up on a journey of self-discovery is filled to the brim with comedy gold. It is so different to other Disney movies for it’s style of comedy, artwork and characters. There’s a great cast consisting of David Spade, John Goodman, Eartha Kitt and Patrick Warburton, plus a song sung by Tom Jones.

Robin Hood

I’ll admit, Robin Hood is one foxy guy! I’ve had a crush on Robin Hood for as long as I can remember, I love his cunning personality and his passion to outwit the rich to help the poor. It’s a film I always remember watching with my dad and is one of my favourites because it is full of comedy, adventure and romance. I love all the animals. The soundtrack is brilliant too.

Bambi

Bambi is a true classic from Disney’s Golden Age. I absolutely love the artwork for this movie because of its vintage style. Bambi and his bunny-friend Thumper are two of my top favourite characters. It has one the saddest scenes in Disney film history (alongside the end of Homeward Bound and beginning of Up for me) but it also has the cutest such as Bambi trying to ice-skate with Thumper. I had to take the photo with my VHS copy because I totally forgot I didn't have it on DVD.

Peter Pan

Another classic from Disney’s Golden Age, Peter Pan is a film I’ll never be too old to love watching. The colourful world of Neverland never fails to put me in awe, plus characters such as Peter Pan, Nanna the dog, Tinkerbell and Mr. Smee and Captain Hook are fantastic.

So that’s my top 10 Disney films! What are your personal favourites? Did I name any of them? Please let me know in the comments below!
